Kitchen floor nemesis

The old floor was old and non slippy.

I had new kitchen a short while ago.

They put nice new vinyl tiles on floor.

And they are quite slippy. Enough to have hurt myself three times since installed.

This time I slipped hurting both legs meaning today I had to ask someone who lives nearby to take dog for a walk.

I didn't have enough money on me to give the bloke enough for a pint.

There were these feelings

How can I have slipped?

Guilt on not walking my own dog

And a very horrible feeling when the dog wasn't here whilst on the walk.

And embarrassment that I had to ask and couldn't even give the bloke enough for a pint .

A strange day indeed.

I'm not usually one to fall.

A Blog about.......

Living on own has its issues.

The other day I nearly c h o k e d on a paracetamol.

No assistance.

No one thinks of that when they think of single people do they?

Now I should really blog and blog on this subject, but, I'm sure those
with their own minds can see pro's and cons of living on your own.

You could comment with your own issues if you like?
No?
Ok.
I'll raise a glass on my own and toast myself for this incredibly
insightful blog piece then.

French Atos Staff Speak against WCA

This piece has been published by the ATOS Outsourcing staff union on their blog.
http://sudatosorigin.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/atos-healthcare-en-grande-bretagn...

(Headline) ATOS Healthcare in Britain a is a shameful scandal
overlooked in France.

The British Govt, keen to make small savings here and there in the
middle of their economic crisis has a range of ways of going about it.
One of the most scandalous is probably the one Atos won the contract
for from the Department of Work and Pensions. Atos has developed a
system to flush out fraudsters and those deemed "fit for work",
basically an electronic form used to evaluate the disabled, terminally
ill cancer patients, people injured in the workplace etc. If they do
not meet the criteria or if they don't turn up for he interview: their
benefits are stopped.

The reason this system is scandalous is because people, even those
with profound disabilities, can under it be considered fit for work;
also mental illnesses are not properly taken into account.

Campaign groups for people with disabilities are outraged to see Atos
sponsoring the Paralympic Games and are demanding a boycott.

According to the Daily Mail, there have been 103 suicides related to
the new test since its implementation. (1)

Atos Healthcare is a division of Atos Consulting operating in the
health sector in the UK where it employs over 3,000 people. Its
largest contract is with the DWP under which it conducts assessments
of people receiving disability benefits.

The assessment test used is very controversial. It has been criticised
in the UK by MPs, the judiciary and disability rights groups including
Citizens Advice Bureaux. (2) These groups have found many examples of
terminally ill and severely disabled people deemed fit for work and
ineligible for benefits as a result of a computer-based evaluation
carried out by Atos Healthcare, which is paid £100 million per year by
the government to administer the tests. Charities have concluded that
the system is not fit for purpose and remain concerned about its
reliability, despite the government's commitment to improve it. (3)

The competence of Atos and its employees has been called into question
by health professionals for setting up its automated medical
examination system known as "LIMA". These examinations are widely
criticized by those who are subject to the evaluation. (4)
The system is automated with a number of yes / no answers, which don't
allow those administering them to take into account
progressive/degenerative diseases, mental illness etc.., But the
system also evaluates people's functional capacity based on unfair
criteria.

For example, one question is: do you watch "Eastenders" and
"Coronation Street"? (Two very popular television series in Britain).
A 'yes' answer, as far as the software is concerned means that the
person is able to remain seated for 30 minutes, even if the person in
question actually watches the programme lying down.

There are multiple errors in the records, some very wide of the mark.

The system refuses to take account of other medical records /
documents, including those from specialists.
20 out of 55 Atos examination centres have no disabled access, and
some are more than 5 - 15 minutes from the nearest station.

A significant number of disabled or sick people, who were previously
receiving welfare benefits, are now considered employable or able to
participate in a work related activity programme. What this also means
is the end of their entitlement.

If they do not attend a mandatory job/work readiness interview (even
if they are disabled and the obstacles to their attendance make this
is impossible) their unemployment benefits are stopped. (5)

The qualifications & competence of the assessors are questionable;
merely 17 hours of training for nurses, a few days for doctors, and
attractive salaries: £ 32,000 for nurses for a job from 9 to 5 hours,
no weekend work etc.. (6)

The type of people considered employable under the assessment includes
terminally ill cancer patients, people suffering from Parkinson's
disease, and chronic and debilitating illnesses for which there is no
hope of improvement, but for which there will every year be a further
mandatory review. The list is endless.

The Guardian newspaper in an article in March 19 (8) quotes Peter, a
computer analyst officially registered blind in 2009 who was denied
his entitlement and obliged to look for work. (11)

Atos is expected to make recommendations that are reviewed by a panel
that makes the final decision. This panel is made up of 'JCP
decision-makers', the staff of Job Centre Plus, a glorified ANPE
[National Employment Agency]. There do not appear to be any panel
members from the medical profession.

99.78% of Atos's recommendations are accepted by the panel, at the
expense of any recommendations of GPs and specialists who have know
their patients for years. (10)

There have been many demonstrations by pressure groups and activists
since the scandal erupted across the Channel. So much so that we are
surprised it is unknown in France. Protesters brandished banners that
read "Atos doesn't give a toss" and "Atos kills". The latter a
reference to the small but growing number of applicants who have died
following the cessation of their benefits. ( 12) (13) (14)

If you read this Wikipedia article on Atos,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atos, you will see that the French
version is a bowdlerised version of the English version which does
make reference to the controversy of the withdrawal of benefits based
on reviews conducted by Atos.

The 'omerta' of the French press underlines the multinational clout of
Atos's Mr BRETON. This same person who already has a notorious history
at France Telecom, the company famous for numerous suicides.

Atos won the contract with the British government in an economic
recession and with a cost reduction program in place in the public
sector. With the right-wing government of Mr Cameron, a real witch
hunt was triggered against welfare recipients. A highly virulent
campaign by the British government has portrayed the disabled as
parasites who take advantage of the system, although fraud actually
represents only 0.5%. In this context, the requirements placed on Atos
are clear. The result is a reduction in the number of persons entitled
to disability benefits because the criteria have changed.

Since the system was first tested in late 2009 [note: under the
previous Govt] about 390,000 people have litigated in the courts of
appeal against a decision on suitability for employment. The courts
have been forced to open on Saturday and to increase their workforce
by 30% since January 2010 to deal with the workflow and the cost of
these appeals is expected to reach £50 million per year by the end of
this month. (7)

About 38% of all court appeals find in favor of the applicant, and the
benefit is subsequently granted. Where an applicant is supported in
his appeal by a person from an advocacy group, such as Citizens
Advice, the success rate is much higher approximately 68%. (8)

This shameful scandal should not stay in the shadows. Our duty as
employees of Atos members and trade unionists, is to inform you about
these events that affect disabled workers for whom on this side of the
Channel we have a special regard.

Your duty now is to participate in awareness-raising of the scandal by
informing your colleagues, friends and families.

Roaming Dogs on Estate.

What I hate to see as a dog owner: Just saw TWO dogs loose, no owners
in sight, out the back. Too many too often.

How do I know whether when out my dog is safe from a loose dog? I
Dont. Thats The point isnt it.

Oh I could get rope or something and catch all these roaming dogs and
tie them outside the police station. Ah not police responsibility is
council. Council promised actions round here for at least 8 or 9 that
are let roam. I see little , there are still roamers. Also carrying
rope and stick around may look wierd.

We also get strange ones not seen before too turn up from time to
time. We had three running as a pack around the other week,
fascinating to watch the behaviour but potentially catastrophic. Can
you tell I dont like loose roaming dogs?

Sorry re rant on roaming dogs.

Immediately Stop Work Capability Assessments Press Release

STOP WORK CAPABILITY ASSESMENTS IN CURRENT FORM #BRAVEHEART #GPs #NHS #ATOS

BLACK TRIANGLE ANTI-DEFAMATION CAMPAIGN IN DEFENCE OF DISABILITY RIGHTS PRESS RELEASE

Scotland's GP's call for an end to controversial 'fit for work' tick-box tests carried out by French IT company 'with immediate effect'

Scotland's GP's have today called to an end to the Government's controversial computer-based 'Work Capability Assessments' carried out by French IT multinational Atos Origin for the DWP with ''immediate effect':

http://www.bma.org.uk/images/slmc2011agenda_tcm41-212139.pdf
60 Lothian: That this conference, in respect of Work Capability Assessments (WCA) as performed by ATOS Healthcare, believes that:
i. the inadequate computer-based assessments that are used have little regard to the nature or complexity of the needs of long term sick and disabled persons
ii. the WCA should end with immediate effect and be replaced with a rigorous and safe system that does not cause avoidable harm to some of the weakest and most vulnerable in society

The Scottish-based disability rights and advocacy group Black Triangle was instrumental in getting the motion tabled at the Scottish Local Medical Committee's (SLMC) conference at Clydebank.

Dr. Stephen Carty who works as a GP in the Leith area of Edinburgh and who is an active member of the campaign said:

"I welcome the support of the Scottish LMC conference on this matter.

This sends a ray of hope to some of the weakest and most vulnerable in society.

It also sends a clear message to other representative bodies including the General Medical Council (GMC) of the significant concerns shared by many GPs across the country."

He said that "In my opinion the current contractual arrangements between the DWP and General Practice are unsustainable. The WCA as performed by ATOS is not an effective or safe method of determining "fitness to work" and this must be addressed."

He continued: "All doctors are duty bound by the GMC to report any system or process that may be harmful to patients. The WCA is a harmful process. Scottish GPs have spoken: the GMC cannot remain silent on this matter any longer"

John McArdle, a founding member of Black Triangle said:

"The scandal of these assessments has gone on far too long. As a grassroots disabled people's organisation we are over the moon that Scotland's GP's have spoken out so clearly and unequivocally in their condemnation. Our GP's recognise the severe and avoidable damage that is being done to sick and disabled people through this brutal, draconian and profoundly unjust testing regime as they see it every single day. It must be halted now – 'with immediate effect'.- before any further harm results and whilst the GMC launches a thorough investigation. They can no longer remain silent. They must act. "

Politics, Science, Draconia, - attitude and effect

20th December 2011 The future of politics should be nerdy too by Lisa Chalkley

Since my thyroid problems started I’ve listened to audio books through the night, it is one of the few things that help me to stay asleep. Awakening the other morning to Philip Zimbardo’s ‘The Lucifer Effect’ was distinctly unsettling. I’d decided to listen to his book about how good people can end up doing bad things, before I got a copy of Steven Pinker’s book ‘The Better Angels of Our Nature: The Decline of Violence in History and Its Causes’. Zimbardo’s book is older and discusses his Stanford Prison Experiment, one of psychology’s fascinating experiments that nobody would be allowed to repeat due to ethics, unless they are a government running Guantanamo Bay. I thought I’d listen to what I thought would be the more horrible book before the newer, more positive book.
I’d woken to Zimbardo describing his fury with a visiting professor. They’d demolished the prison to see off a riot, which turned out to be merely a rumour. Sitting amongst the shambles, Zimbardo felt furious and defensive when asked questions about the situation by the professor. In retrospect, he said that he wished he’d just said ‘I was wrong, I made a mistake’. Instead, by deflecting criticism and being left with rage and embarrassment, he and the students acting as prison wardens succumbed to group think, with no-one playing devil’s advocate and they took it out on a group of ready made scapegoats – the students playing prison inmates. I had to stop listening at that point, it turned my stomach, especially as the day before I’d reread Amelia Gentleman’s Guardian piece England Riots: the personal cost.
I personally think that 10 months in prison for stealing two left footed trainers is ludicrous, considering the impact it will have on the young woman’s future. The demonization of the young, the vulnerable and anyone with little power over their lives seems foolish to me and likely to cause more social problems in the long term. The disparity in justice was again highlighted yesterday by the Telegraph’s report by Rosa Prince: ‘MPs who repaid expenses got money back in secret deal’ and Steve Bell’s cartoon on sweetheart tax deals. Justice being ‘seen to be done’ seems highly dependent on your place in the pecking order. I live in Cambridge (UK) and any walk around the lovely village of Grantchester involves stopping to look at Lord Archer’s stately pile and wondering how he manages to have it despite thieving, lying, perjury, cheating etc. (Private Eye ad infinitum). It seems to me that the Government are content to behave like Zimbardo and his band of student prison officers and merrily scapegoat people who are unable to fight back. Disabled people are feeling scapegoated and for a historical perspective that ties into current media nonsense, Katherine Quarmby’s book ‘Scapegoat’ does the job well. But what intrigued me was Zimbardo’s starting point for the process and that it may have been averted by saying ‘I made a mistake, I was wrong’. It is that phrase that seems to be an anathema in British politics and I think is the root of much of its foolishness.

I chucked a pamphlet from Labour in the bin the other day. It gleefully pointed out how our current Cambridge MP Julian Huppert had ‘flip flopped’. He had changed his mind over an aspect of policy. That this is seen as worthy of the cost of a leaflet campaign and constituted a valid attack on Huppert being a good MP epitomized to me the ridiculousness of the black and white thinking in politics. I had enjoyed his talk at Cambridge Skeptics in the Pub (here’s the podcast interview) and the trials and tribulations of a scientist entering the House of Commons was by turns entertaining and gobsmacking. He has been jeered for blathering on about that pesky stuff ‘evidence’. Our Government’s inability to cope with evidence, even in its most clear and hardy of forms is nicely dissected my Martin Robins article ‘Conservatives put Dumb and Dumber on the health select committee.’ More recently, Ben Goldacre has been wondering why the Government seem happy to mess up public health, despite us having so much evidence into what works in ‘The future of medicine is nerdy: does evidence synthesis save more lives than a shiny new drug?’ This is where I stole my title from. Dr Goldacre posits that it is the synthesis and dissemination of the information we already possess which will improve healthcare. I think his is right. I also think that this perspective would be helpful in politics and social problems too.

I’d rather that my MP wasn’t such an oddity in that he can eat dinner with lobbyists, listen to them and think that although their point of view is interesting, it has not changed the facts on which he has based his direction of voting. Or that if he has made a decision and a constituent contacts him and points out adverse effects, he will take that into consideration and adjust or not adjust his position accordingly. He is willing to admit when he is wrong and to lurk in shifting grey areas. The fact that the House of Commons seems averse to this in the light of some pretty cold hard scientific evidence is, well a bit dated really. But at least there are some MP’s of this ilk there. But what about areas of science that aren’t traditionally seen as robust as the physical sciences? What about psychology?

Zimbardo’s book isn’t just all horrible stuff; it moves on to show how the research helped them formulate ideas to prevent situations where good people do bad things. Steven Pinker’s jolly good TED talk: a brief history of violence quotes from Peter Singer’s work ‘The Expanding Circle, Ethics, Evolution and Moral Progress’ exploring theories as to why there is less violence now. I know that at first glance, anyone having a crappy time of it right now may feel shocked and affronted at the optimistic titles but give them a go. They chime beautifully with the work of a spoonie hero of mine (a title, I add, he is happy to have) Martin Sibley and his 'Disability Diamond Theory’ . A nice introduction to him and his work is his guest blog post on Nicky Clark’s blog, an amazing campaigner who has truly been in the firing line this year. In other words, we have some pretty good ideas about how groups of people behave and this gives us some good ideas about wiser courses of action. As with any science, mistakes will be made and then this gives us information which we can use to adjust our theories, ideas and actions.

Psychology has always been more prone to political expediency, but I’m hopeful that we can require our politicians to look at evidence and not decry them for changing their minds as mere ‘flip flopping’ or denounce them when they start from a theory that turned out to need adjusting. We do possess enough information already to make wiser decisions in the realms of health and social care. The use of technology and social media is expanding the circles of empathy, recognition and inclusion for disabled people in an unprecedented way. I know it may not seem like that when the web is throwing up trolls at the alarming rate that Sue Marsh has faced on her blog ‘Diary of a Benefit Scrounger’ (let alone the tone or the online attacks on feminists and women in the skeptical movement). But as psychologist Dorothy Rowe points out in her blog ‘How to deal with a crisis’:

“By using the internet and protesting peacefully we have the chance of bringing changes that would have been impossible twenty years ago, changes that we might never have expected. When the people in the Occupy the London Stock Exchange protest got together they could never have expected to unseat the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral and turn a bright spotlight on those churchmen who are more concerned with maintaining a close relationship with those who have money and power rather than with following Jesus whose views about money were very clear.”

We will have to remember to treat ourselves and each other kindly as we stumble around in this brave new world, we will also make mistakes. But I think we can take heart, if we keep thinking and keep talking, we seem to be in a unique place for change.

Landlines Phone Scam Alert

 This arrived in my Email

(EDIT: There were email addresses here in original message. Removed. )

PLEASE PASS ON TO YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY.

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill.

He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media,
allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!
I asked the guy's name - he gave me as John Peacock
& phone number -  0800 0800 152      .

Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered
to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up &
try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this.
AND HE DID!!

My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me
again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he
was with BT.
I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card,
there & then.
I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no
intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked
for BT.

He hung up.

I dialed 1471 - number withheld
I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized.

So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only
just started apparently, but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam.

The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some
people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this.

How is it done?
This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should
have been             0800 800 152       which takes you through to BT Business.
The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with
the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you
trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to
terminate it).

When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back.
You could almost be convinced!

The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool
many.

By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get
past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details
which include the security number, so that it can be used for far
larger purchases.

This event has been set up to replace the original one as we feel it will have more impact if people can send emails at the same time. The draft letter has been adapted to mention the cut in winter fuel allowance & restrictions on the new Warm Home Discount, which is replacing Social Tariffs.

As we are all aware, in recent months there has been a massive rise in prices of GAS and electricity.

The Shadow Energy Secretary has informed us that The Opposition have requested that energy suppliers are investigated by the Competition Commision

And his words were "That the Government must be convinced to do it"

He also Supported our concerns over the likely impact upon people.
He Said the way for confidence to be gained by customers was a full investigation into pricing.

So we would ask that you write (Email) your MP/Lord asking that British Gas and the Other Energy Suppliers are referred to the Competition Commission and a full investigation over pricing is undertaken. Please also send a copy of your email to the media – list of email addresses will be posted later.

This really is important because if theres ANY chance of controlling these catastrophic energy price rises we must take it.

***ED MILLIBAND said Labour would fight for the people on energy matters, but we can do this for ourselves too***

Here is a draft email, please feel free to use it or adapt it for your own purpose. You may like to add your own story for more impact.

Please send an email to your MP & also send a copy to the media. Links below.

Dear Name(mp)

I am sure you are aware of the recent huge rises in domestic energy costs.

The Shadow Energy Secretary has informed people publicly that The Opposition have requested that energy suppliers are investigated by the Competition Commision

This is to try and bring some sense to this and to protect the paying customers, and prevent excessive impact and harm to individuals throughout the nation.

As a concerned member of the public affected by these horrendous price rises, I would ask that British Gas and the other energy suppliers are referred to the Competition Commission and that a full investigation of pricing is undertaken.

This is a subject of extreme public interest, in particular this year because the winter fuel allowance is being reduced by £50 for the over sixties and £100 for the over eighties. Furthermore, not everyone eligible for the new Warm Home Discount, which is to replace social tariffs, will receive it because of funding limits. Once again this will impact on the elderly, sick, disabled and most vulnerable of our society.

I hope you can push for this referral and for any subsequent recommendations to then be upheld.

Yours

Dear (editor/name/whoever)

Regarding The November 30th Strike Actions

I am not able to attend the Strike Actions for (reason)

This does in no way mean I dont fully support the actions being taken.

I and many others hope that this sends the correct and very direct, strong message to this current Government that they are NOT acting in the interests of most of the people in this country, but rather for a "protected middle England".
We cannot accept that excluding swages of citizens from considerations is correct.
Pensions being punitively changed, Public Services cut, jobs lost, libraries closing, people being Hit Hard by cuts that are in no way acceptable to those being hurt by them. The pensions changes will penalise thousands and thousands of hard working public workers.

May this serve to show the Government that people have had enough of the rough handed, ill thought out and damaging actions from the Government.
